TOD MACHOVER and the POWERS (VIDEO)
Montecarlo: ritorno al futuro con la proiezione dell’Opera “Death and the Powers” del Professore Tod Machover per celebrare il Quinto Anniversario dell’Associazione Monegasca “Futurum”.
Occasione unica quella svoltasi ieri pomeriggio (sabato 18 luglio) presso il grazioso Teatro Princesse Grace di Montecarlo dove in presenza di un parterre d’eccezione vi è stata la proiezione, in dvd ad alta definizione, dell’opera innovativa “Death and the Powers” (“La Morte e la famiglia Powers”) di Tod Machover, professore statunitense di musicologia e compositore di fama internazionale, che ha inventato una nuova tecnologia applicata alla musica in grado di utilizzare “Hyperinstruments” (ndr: strumenti musicali digitali). L’evento ha voluto essere un omaggio al pubblico di Montecarlo che aveva già seguito con grande interesse l’inaugurazione di questo grande progetto presentato, in anteprima mondiale, il 24 settembre 2010.
Presente alla serata anche Madame Kawther Al Abood, Presidente dell’Associazione Culturale Monegasca “Futurum”, sotto l’Alto Patronato di S.A.S. Principe Alberto II di Monaco, impegnata nella ricerca, sviluppo ed implementazione di progetti ed eventi proiettati al futuro nel mondo delle Arti e delle Scienze, con l’aiuto delle nuove tecnologie e della robotica.
La pièce operistica, girata al Dallas Opera House, affianca, per la prima volta, cantanti d’opera di grande talento con robot in grado di sintetizzare con straordinario realismo la vocalità umana in ogni timbro e tonalità musicale. L’impatto è travolgente fin dalle prime sequenze e trasporta il pubblico in una dimensione assolutamente sconosciuta.
Il protagonista, Simon Powers, imprenditore milionario ormai vicino alla fine dei suoi giorni, incarna il desiderio di immortalità che da sempre accomuna molti umani portandolo alla realtà grazie ad un ingegnoso Sistema che gli permetterà di “scaricare” il suo essere in un sofisticato hardware che gli consentirà di rimanere in contatto con i suoi cari (moglie e figlia) e di seguire i suoi affari di lavoro “per sempre”.
Ben presto, tuttavia, la triste realtà di non poter più percepire la presenza di un corpo umano che trasmette sentimenti e può dare affetto, affiora soprattutto attraverso le parole della figlia, Miranda, i cui dubbi sull’efficacia del Sistema ci portano a riflettere sui limiti della tecnologia e della robotica, che non possono prescindere dall’uomo né sostituirne l’essenza.
Ecco, dunque, che dall’opera di Tod Machover scaturisce un’importante riflessione sulla fragilità esistenziale dell’essere umano alla ricerca di un’immortalità che si rivela però imperfetta anche se ci si affida alla precisione di un Sistema artificiale robotizzato.

Montecarlo: back to the future at the showing of the Opera “Death and the Powers” by Professor Tod Machover in order to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Monegasque Association “Futurum”.
Yesterday afternoon (on Saturday the 18th July) a unique event took place at the Princesse Grace Theatre in Montecarlo where it was presented to an exclusive audience a HD dvd version of the innovative Opera “Death and the Powers” by Tod Machover, American musicology professor and internationally well-known composer, who invented a new technology applied to music able to use “Hyperinstruments” (note: digital musical instruments). This event was meant as a tribute to the Monegasque public who has already showed its great interest to this innovative project at the opening ceremony, in world preview, held on the 24th September 2010 in the Principality.
Among the participants to the event, we recall Madame Kawther Al Abood, President of the Cultural Monegasque Association “Futurum”, under the high patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. The Association is actively involved in the research, development and implementation of futuristic projects and events in the fields of Arts and Sciences, supported by new technologies and robotics.
The Play, filmed at the Dallas Opera House, places side by side, for the first time, talented opera singers and robots able to synthesize extraordinary realistic human vocal sounds in any timbres and musical tonality. The impact is passionate, from the very beginning, and carries the audience in an unknown dimension.
The main character, Simon Powers, a billionaire entrepreneur close to the end of his life, embodies the common desire of immortality, always sought by human beings, converting it into reality thanks to a clever System which allows him to “download” his being into a sophisticated hardware aimed at both keeping everlasting contacts with his beloved wife and daughter and carry on his own business, forever.
Nevertheless, it is soon clear that without any perception of the human body flesh transmitting feelings and offering love, something really important is missing. This concept emerges clearly through the words of his daughter, Miranda, whose doubts about the efficiency of the System make us ponder on the limits of technology and robots which can’t exclude nor substitute the human being.
The Opera by Tod Machover inspires then a key consideration on the existential human fragility seeking an immortality which reveals itself imperfect even assisted by the artificial precision of a Robot System.
